The necessary information will differ depending on the type of security you want to define. There is a minimum amount of information needed for each type. If you want your user-defined security to be incorporated in reports such as the X-Ray and Snapshot, you will need to provide more details.
Minimal information needed to enter a user defined security:
• Security type
• Symbol or CUSIP
• Description
• Base Currency
• Day Type (for Fixed Income, CMO and Mortgage Backed)
Auto-populated fields:
• Asset Class
• Industry
• Sector
• Exchange
• Country
• Country of Origin
Information needed for Options:
• Option type
• Strike price
• Expiration Date
• Contract size
If you want the X-Ray and Snapshot Reports to show the security you have defined, you must enter information on the Detail tab of the Security Wizard.
Security details needed for Mutual Funds, Closed End funds, ETFs, and VAs:
• Domestic Stock
• International Stock
• Domestic Bond
• International Bond
• Cash
• Other
• NC
Security details needed for Stocks:
• Asset Class
• Country
• Country of Origin
Security details needed for Fixed Income:
Country

Other notes on how Morningstar Office uses the information you provide:
For Equity style we use Asset Class, for Sector we use Sector field, and for Region we use Country.
In order for the security to populate the Fixed Income Style Box, it will need to have a Duration and S&P Rating. Duration is calculated using par value, coupon rate, payment frequency, and price. If you do not have this information, the system will use the Maturity Date to calculate Duration, though this will not be able to take rate risk into consideration. Prices are needed to calculate Market Value valuation.
On the third page of the Snapshot Report, we need the security’s monthly returns in order to show some return values.
For Quick Snapshot we need to have securities’ monthly total return data.
