Changing the benchmark for an account

The Morningstar U.S. Market TR is the default benchmark for accounts. However, we recognize that it is not always the most relevant index to compare with your account. You can select another benchmark from a variety of securities, categories, objectives, and other indexes.

To change a benchmark for an account

  1. In the left navigation pane, click Portfolio Management. The Portfolio Management tab opens.

  2. In the left-hand column, click Accounts. The Accounts spreadsheet opens.

  3. Double-click the account for which you want to change the benchmark. The account opens to the Holdings Summary.  

  4. From the Tools menu, point to Settings, and then click Select Benchmark. The Select Benchmark dialog box opens.

  5. Click the Within arrow to choose the index type you want. Choices include research universes, categories, objectives, custom benchmarks, and indexes.

  6. Click the Find By arrow to select either Name or Ticker (if applicable).

  7. In the Find box, type the name or ticker and click Go. Matching items appear in the Available Records box.

  8. Highlight your desired benchmark. You may only select one.

  9. Click OK. The new benchmark is now assigned to this account.

  4. In the left pane, click the Profile/Settings header. The Profile/Settings menu items appear.

  5. Click Account Setup. The Account Basics screen opens.

  6. In the Benchmark box, click the magnifying glass icon. The Select Benchmark dialog box opens.

  7. Click the Within arrow to choose the index type you want. Choices include research universes, categories, objectives, custom benchmarks, and indexes.

  8. Click the Find By arrow to select either Name or Ticker (if applicable).

  9. In the Find box, type the name or ticker and click Go. Matching items appear in the Available Records box.

  10. Highlight your desired benchmark. You may only select one.

  11. Click OK. The new benchmark is now assigned to this account.
