Creating a Static Model Portfolio

Morningstar Office allows you to create model portfolios of your preferred holdings that you can then map to an asset allocation and use in your plans.

  1. There are multiple ways to start the process of setting up a Static Model Portfolio. Use any of the methods available below.

    1. From the top menu, select New, Static Models, or

    2. From the Investment Planning or Workspace tab, select Model Portfolios, and then the Static Model page. From the toolbar above the grid, click New. The Model Portfolio dialog box opens.

  2. Enter a descriptive name for the model in the Model Name field.

  3. Click on the magnifying glass next to the Attached Asset Allocation field and select a pre-defined set, if desired.

  4. The default benchmark appears in the Benchmark box. Click the magnifying glass icon if you want to select a different benchmark for this model portfolio.

  5. Click Next and the Holdings Entry dialog opens.

  6. Use the magnifying glass in the Symbol column to add individual holdings, or from the Action menu, select Add Multiple to add multiple holdings at one time. When complete, click OK to return to the Holdings Entry screen.

  7. Determine how the allocation will be dispersed among the holdings; by weighted percentage or by dollar amount.

    1. To allocate by weight, choose the Enter By menu and then select Weight. You would then manually enter an amount for each holding in the Weight % column.

    2. If you want to assign equal weighting to each holding, use the Apply All menu, and select Equal Weight. Total weighting must equal 100%.

    3. A new model portfolio defaults to a Total Amount of $10,000. To allocate by dollar amount, choose the Enter By menu and then select Amount. You would then manually enter an amount for each holding in the USD Equivalent Amount column. The Weight column and Total Amount are adjusted automatically based on the amounts entered.

    4. If you want to allocate the same amount to each holding, enter the amount for one holding, then place a checkmark next to that holding to select it. From the Apply All menu, select Amount.

  8. Click Recalculate to update the pie chart, style boxes, and stock sectors. They will be filled in according to the weightings allocated.

  9. Click Finish. The model portfolio is saved and displays in the grid.
