Quarterly Earnings
Quarterly Earnings $ vs. Year Earlier $
This graph shows the quarterly trend in a company's earnings per share. Within each pair of bars, the one on the right shows that quarter's diluted earnings per share. The one on the left shows the diluted earnings per share of the same quarter one year earlier. By comparing each quarter with the same quarter one year before, we avoid distortions arising from seasonal businesses. If the bar on the right is higher than the bar on the left, the company's earnings grew during the period.
The first four pairs of bars are all historical numbers and based on net diluted EPS. The second to last pair contains analyst estimates of the current quarter's earnings per share compared with the (historical) earnings per share for the same period a year earlier and are based on "Diluted EPS from Continuing Operations." The last pair contains analyst estimates of the next quarter's earnings per share compared with the (historical) earnings per share for the same period a year earlier and are based on "Diluted EPS from Continuing Operations." The quarterly forecasts and data for last 4 bars are provided by Reuters Estimates.
Earnings Growth %
The percentage change in a company’s quarterly earnings per share versus the same period from the previous year. For example, a 25% figure in the 03/99 column means that the company’s earnings per share grew 25% in the quarter ending March 1999 versus the quarter ending March 1998. For comparison purposes, we also show the average figures for the company’s industry.
Earnings Surprises %
This graph shows whether a company has beaten analyst estimates or fallen short. Each bar shows the percentage that a company’s actual reported earnings per share for the given quarter exceeded or fell short of analyst estimates for that quarter. A bar above the horizontal line shows that the company beat analyst estimates. A bar below the line shows the company missed analyst estimates. This information is provided by Reuters Estimates.
Typically it’s a bullish sign to see a company beating estimates. Companies that consistently beat analyst estimates tend to have good-performing stocks.
