After completing the installation, you will see a new menu in your Excel window, Morningstar Template, which is located between two common menus, Windows and Help. You will find a sub menu in Template. Clicking on it will lead you to a web page at https://admainnew.morningstar.com/ExcelPlugInTemplates/index.aspx. This is where you can download pre-designed worksheets or templates. All templates are developed as Excel macros. So before you download, you are advised to set Excel macro security level to High or Medium. When you are in the Excel window, you can find the menu under Tools > Macro > Security to set the macro security to the proper level.
When clicking on the name of a template, you will be prompted to either Open or Save As. Either selection will lead you to download the template. After the template has been downloaded, you can open it. Please select Enable Macro when you are prompted to either Disable Macro or Enable Macro. If Enable Macro is grayed out, then, you need to follow the steps described above to set your Excel macro security to High or Medium.
All available templates are published on the web page mentioned above. More templates will be made available in the coming months. Each template has a well-defined purpose, based on the feedbacks from clients. Price and Return are two example templates. The Price template is designed to allow you to retrieve mutual fund NAVs or stock prices at a various frequencies, including daily, monthly. The Return template is designed to allow you to calculate daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly returns from historical dividend adjusted price series.
